What makes America great is that it was founded on abstract principles like truth, justice, liberty, democracy, the rule of law, and written contracts. People are free to interpret these as they will.

Freedom, liberty, and rights were based on John Locke's idea of 'property rights'. It was the government's role to protect these rights. This is the basis of a liberal society. These property rights are:

1. Self-Ownership ( one's body is one's property)

2. Labor Ownership ( one's work is one's property)

3. Ownership of the fruits of labor (one's products are one's property)

4. Ownership of possessions

5. Ownership of land and real estate

The history of America is the history of fighting for freedom. Slaves and women fought for self-ownership. Labor unions fought for labor and fruits of labor ownership. Gun advocates fight for the right to keep their possessions. Now the 'Middle Class' is fighting to retain ownership of real estate.

Marx said the foundation of communism is the abolition of private property. Americans have been fighting Marxism around the world because they know all other freedoms spring from property rights.

Americans know exactly what freedom means, not because they read Locke, but because they fight so hard for it.
