What is missing from this story is the link between capitalism and ‘Nature’. Capitalism ( and socialism too) treat nature as a ‘natural resource’ something to be used and exploited. Nature for capitalism and socialism becomes a utilitarian object for human use. The first step in environmentalism is to break this connection and assumption that all of nature is a ‘natural resource’. We must see nature as what it is; an ecosystem that supports life. This includes human life, as well as animal and plant life. Thus, the origin of the problem is not ‘capitalism’, but the idea intrinsic to it that nature is a ‘natural resource’ to be exploited.
