There is a belief that a postindustrial society is the natural evolution of an industrial society, and we must reduce fossil fuel consumption and move to non-industrial processes. But this is not true. Postindustrial society is based entirely on industrial society. A society still needs industrial energy, agriculture, and manufacturing to be postindustrial. A country may outsource manufacturing to China, or energy production to Russia, but it still needs these things. There seems to be a liberal/left idea that 'production' can magically disappear and we can move to a purely consumer based society.

Russia knows this is not true and is betting on the long game.
