There are two solution, one bad and one good.

The bad solution everyone is promoting is to have big developers pay $1 million plus per unit and build huge condo buildings, especially in the low density areas of Western S.F.. This would be absolutely devastating as all of S.F. would be turned into Manhattan, with high rents well over $5,000 a month and all property being owned by large corporations.

The second solution is to get individual owners to build ADUs in their back yards. This could add two or more units to each single family house in the Western part of S.F.. It would also be low cost compared to the $1 million for the large corporate condos. Individuals could continue to own in S.F. and ADUs encourage families and extended families. These units could be low income with S.F. subsidizing the owner's construction costs. With prefab units, these could be built in a matter of months.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is political will do much of anything, so we will just continue business as usual.
