The United States is headed down the path of European style communitarianism. The two coasts and especially California are moving fast in that direction. The problem of communitarianism is that the rights of the individual are seen as given by the state, as opposed to be intrinsic to humanity. The state can dictate what rights an individual receives. In China women are told how many children they can and cannot have. Should that not be the right of the individual? The U.S. seems to be in disarray because we are fighting over human rights, but make no mistake we value human rights more than any other country in the world. We are fighting to make sure all have human rights, and it is a balance between individualism and communitarianism. In an age of climate change communitarianism seems to make more sense, but not if we give up individual freedoms and human rights.
