Sustainable development was a term invented by the United Nations in their ‘Agenda 21’ report. It was to address the inequality between developed and undeveloped countries of the world. Developed countries should decrease ‘unsustainable’ practices, while undeveloped countries should develop along more sustainable lines. Unfortunately China in the last 20 years has developed unsustainably by building thousands of coal fire plants, and modern polluting cities for millions. If other regions of the world develop as unsustainably as China, say India and Africa, the world will be destroyed. The problem is the modern city over-produces, and over-consumes. Sustainable develop would be new ways of developing cities that do not use fossil fuels, and do not over-produce, and consume. The biggest problem to be solved is how do countries with large populations modernize and lift people out of poverty without dooming the planet.
