Postmodernism focuses on agency and autonomy. (Foucault for example.) The class struggle of Marxism and Socialism has been superseded by autonomy. This is because capitalism has moved beyond the conditions Marx knew into a postindustrial economy. This is why Marxists hate Postmodernists, because they believe the focus on autonomy eliminates the class struggle of socialism.

Autonomy as a political concept is not an 'American' thing, it is a postindustrial, Postmodern infatuation. The French focus on autonomy is just as strong as the American.
