My theory is that Postmodern society deliberately tries to destroy 'sense-making' so that Power (both state and market) can control people as 'subjects'. It is impossible to know what exactly is true, but we can discern that we are being lied to.
People revolt against Power controlling knowledge by trying to 'appropriate' that knowledge themselves. Often people are not experts enough to do so, but they attempt to at least show how Power is lying. So 'conspiracy theories' are an attempt by people to 'appropriate' knowledge themselves.
The control of knowledge by Power in Postmodern society is very dangerous, especially when they try to control professionals and technicians. It is far more dangerous than any individual 'conspiracy theorist'. If lied to enough the people will revolt.
Buddha, Moses, and Jesus were all conspiracy theorists.
