Jesus said the poor will always be with us. Certainly, we should help the poor, but poverty will never be eliminated.
In 2023, supposedly 750 people in San Francisco died of drug overdoes. ( I think this number is much higher.) The police have been told to not arrest minor crimes like drug sales. The police force has been reduced and instead they hired 'city ambassadors' called 'Urban Alchemy' to help people with non-police actions. Instead of properly staffing the police force, they paid Urban Alchemy $20 million a year for actions like "interrupting negative behavior".
Police reduction in the U.S. has been an unmitigated disaster. Hundreds of people are dying on the streets ever year due to lack of enforcement of existing laws. I think the tide is starting to change and people are realizing we need to enforce our basic laws, and we need police to perform their function.
