In Gasset's book Revolt of the Masses, he describes the problem of 'mass man' being a specialist who thinks his limited area of expertise makes him an expert at everything. This is especially true with politics.

Also making mass man is consumerism. Mass man thinks he controls society through his consumption.

So the mass man feels he is an expert and can create a better world through mass consumption.

The anxiety in society today are the masses realizing they are not in charge. There is a rise in populism today in America because our technocratic leaders have failed us. The masses think society and capitalism is falling apart, but in reality this is the way it was designed.
