I was curious about this too so I calculated what would happen where I live. I actually live in one of the most survivable areas; about 20 miles North of San Francisco. There is a mountain between where I live and any potential nuclear bomb on San Francisco. There are water reservoirs here, wild turkeys, and deer. Very survivable.

In doing research on climate change I found this analysis that looks at risk factors around the U.S. made by FEMA. This is for climate change, but is actually good for other risk factors like nuclear war, or even civil war. https://hazards.fema.gov/nri/map
