I think most people are looking at this as a free speech issue, or scientific knowledge issue, but it is not. Social media platforms have realized that their platforms can be weaponized for political propaganda, and have tried to crack down on people trying to weaponize them. They want to take the weapons away from their individual users, and instead give authority to governments and institutions. The problem with this approach is that it puts the weapons in the hands of those in power, creating a propaganda machine far more powerful than anything in Communist China.
