I call this 'captured capitalism' where corporations own intellectual property and use it to 'capture' both the consumer and the government regulatory bodies. No need to advertise when you can simply capture the consumer. Apple and Microsoft own the intellectual property for computer platforms, and there is no way escape their capture. Pfizer owns the intellectual property for many drugs. They have 'captured' the FDA that regulates them.

The main stages of capitalism:

1. Increased production from privatization of manufacturing.

2. Increased consumption from advertising and 'selling' desire.

3. 'Capturing' consumption through controlling the consumer.

4. A bureaucratic system of control where the government and industry work together to control production and consumption. This is also called 'late-stage' capitalism.
