How is it possible to transition from fossil fuels? Everything in our modern world is built on its use: steel, glass, plastic, concrete, solar panels, and wind turbines. We may become more efficient in its use, but we need to use it nonetheless. The more troubling issue is how do we lift the billions of people in the developing world out of poverty without creating thousands of coal and fossil fuel plants? It is Western privilege to think we can transition away from fossil fuels and doom billions of people in developing nations to poverty. Eliminating fossil fuels sounds morally correct, but when seen in light of global poverty, just shows Western privilege and lack of understanding of the developing world of Africa, Asia, and India.
