Great idea. This is similar to Frank Lloyd Wright's "Broadacre City" where each citizen would get one acre of land as their birthright.

I think much of the environmental movement is against this. They want people to move into cities, create more density, and use public transportation. This solution creates dependency on cars.

A big problem is also that developers are buying up all developable land and small starter homes, en masse and developing McMansions. This stops individuals from buying land and building their own house. I've been looking for land to build a home, and recently a developer bought up all buildable parcels ( about 40) in the county making it impossible for individuals to buy and build their own houses.
