As an architect I’ve come to realize that we build not for what people need, but what society needs. People may need affordable shelter, but society needs a place to park and save its ‘surplus-value’, capital. Without real estate capitalism will fail, as it is the main place to put one’s capital. Since we value the social structure of capitalism more than people we will never solve the problem as you have outlined it.
