As an architect I pay Autodesk $75 a month for a subscription to Autocad. This is just so I can access my old drawings. Without this subscription I would have no way to open files that I made in the last 20 years. In other words I don't own my own labor.
As a professional architect my "tools of practice" are not owned by me, but by Autodesk. It would be like a carpenter not owning their hammer, and having to pay a subscription for it. Even in the Feudal Middle Ages carpenters (and architects) owned their own tools.
The 'creator economy' is particularly susceptible to this exploitation.
Blame Bill Gates. He invented this exploitative model for software.
